Running backpacks for trail runners and long-distance athletes
For runners, who need more space in their bags for just more than their house keys and an energy bar, a good running backpack is indispensable. Trail runners and long distance runners need at least a hydration system or bottle holders to cover their fluid intake while outdoors. Added space for a light running jacket, additional energy bars, and maybe a wallet and smartphone are helpful for runners.
Running backpacks should be as light and adjustable as possible. Depending on the athlete's requirements, running backpacks usually have a volume between 8 liters and 15 liters. Their flat design holds the backpack's center of gravity as close to the back as possible and hardly limits the freedom of movement. The carrying system doesn't have to be as resilient as that of say a hiking backpack. The low pack weight allows for very light carrier constructions. However, the runner should definitely be careful to make the backpack sit well on the back.
Hydration backpack, trail running vest or running backpack?
Hydration backpacks are equipped with hydration system in various sizes. The container holding the liquid thus sits comfortably on the back and the hydration tube is attached to the backpack's shoulder straps. In this way, the runner can drink comfortably and without unnecessary contortions while running. The volume of some hydration backpacks only allow space for the hydration system, while others also offer additional space for energy bars or other accessories.
Other running backpacks allow the runner to stow their water bottles either in the side pockets of the backpack or partially in the backpack itself. Whether you as a trail runner prefer to drink from the tube or the water bottle, is a matter of personal taste.
Trail running vests partly turn the running backpacks to a clothing item for running. The clear benefit of such running vests is the possibility of distributing the weight evenly over the body. The hydration system thus sit on the back and front and there's additional storage space for water bottles, keys, energy bars in the side pockets. The running vests are treasured especially where there are frequent uphill and downhill passages, because the pockets' contents hardly move during running.
Ultra-light yet stable
The weight of a running backpack is an important factor for every runner. For many, the best thing is for a backpack to be as light as possible. That is why running specialists like Salomon, Inov-8 or Montane only use particularly lightweight materials for producing their running backpacks.
Nevertheless, the backpacks must be sturdily constructed to satisfy the demands of trail running. Thanks to high quality processing, that is thankfully not a problem. In addition, many models are water-repellent and are also thus suitable for training in poor weather.
