Quench your thirst: equip yourself with a great water bottle

Water Bottles

The right hydration system is a must-have on any adventure! Water is a necessity on both short and multi-day trips. There are so many models on the market ranging from collapsible bottles to water sacks. Keep reading to find out more on how to select the right hydration system.

Finding the right water bottle

When selecting a water bottle, you should first consider its design and size.
When going on long tours or if you’re adventuring in hot temperatures, you should choose a larger bottle rather than going for a model with a half-litre volume. In addition, not every water bottle is practical in every situation. A stable water bottle (e.g. Nalgene) is best for athletic activities because you can use these with only one hand. A folding bottle (e.g. Platypus) with a flexible volume is perfectly suited for backpacking trips.

Water bottle or water sack

Depending on your needs and personal preference, you can either choose a water bottle or a hydration system for your backpack. Of course, both types have their advantages and disadvantages, so it’ll depend on the duration and type of adventure you’re going on.
For longer adventures and backpacking in areas without reliable sources of water (creeks, springs), water sacks are the perfect choice since you’re guaranteed sufficient supply. As for shorter activities that don’t require you to carry much, you can simply fill up a water bottle and bring it along with you.

Water filters and water bottles

There are special water filters on the market that allow you to fill up your bottle in remote areas or on multi-day tours. Filter systems ensure that the water you use for cooking and drinking is safe. When camping, it’s often a great idea to bring a flexible hydration bladder with you.

Material and accessories

Water bottles are either made of stainless steel, aluminium or plastic. While metals permanently ensure your water tastes neutral, transparent plastic water bottles allow you to see its contents.
In addition, to prevent any surprises in winter, you can get a thermal protection for your bottle, pouch and neoprene tubes. Purchasing a special cleaning set ensures your system stays clean.
