Camping cutlery to suit everyone

Camping cutlery

Knife, fork and spoon? Or maybe just a spork? There are so many types of camping cutlery to choose from, all of which are made of different materials and have various features. Professional outdoor equipment suppliers, such as Sea to Summit or Primus, make cutlery for everyone, from expedition participants to permanent campers.

Plastic or metal outdoor cutlery

When looking to buy some camping cutlery, you'll need to choose between cutlery made of plastic or various metals. High-quality plastic cutlery is usually made of break-resistant and very durable polycarbonate. This resistant material is particularly lightweight and tough. However, excessive heat coming from a fire or camping stove can damage the plastic.

Knives, forks and spoons made of aluminium, titanium or stainless steel are even tougher. They're not as flexible as plastic cutlery, but if necessary, they can be bent back into place without any problems. Cutlery made of aluminium, Titanal or titanium are lightweight and perfect for trekking, climbing and expeditions. As for outdoor cutlery made of stainless steel, they're very hygienic and easy to clean. These weigh just a few grams more than the ultra-light aluminium or titanium utensils.

Ultra-light soup spoon and comfortable cutlery

If you're in a situation where every gram counts, then you'll need to look for ultra-light and ultra-compact cutlery sets. If you'll be preparing a freeze-dried meal on a hanging stove while climbing, then you won't need more than a small lightweight outdoor spoon or spork. A spork only weighs slightly more than a spoon and is very helpful if you need to poke into your food. This makes it easier to eat vegetables, meat and a salad without the need for additional cutlery.

If weight and volume aren't an important factor, you can get larger utensils that have a better grip and fit more comfortably in your hands. Having a camping table, plates, cups and cutlery can definitely increase your enjoyment of eating outdoors, in a vestibule or in your camper van. In addition, cutlery sets are usually easy to store away since they can be attached together via the use of fastening holes. Some other models let you slide the knife, fork and spoon into each other, so that they take up very little space during transport and don't clatter against each other. Many campers appreciate having high-quality stainless steel cutlery. However, if you're climbing, trekking or hill walking and need ultra-light gear, then cutlery made of sturdy plastic is a very good and functional alternative.
