Kinesiology tape for therapeutic applications and sports injuries

Kinesiology tape

The sports world seems to be full of colourful tapes: whether it's Thera-Band for training and rehab or colourful kinesiology tape on the skin – athletes everywhere can be found covering parts of their bodies with colourful strips. Basically, kinesiology tape is similar to an elastic bandage. This is where the so-called elastic therapeutic tape differs fundamentally from conventional tapes.

Conventional tapes are not as elastic as kinesiology tape and can be used to protect body parts or to prevent certain movements. Kinesiology tape, on the other hand, is used specifically to stabilise or relieve pressure on individual parts of the body and covers many different areas of application.

What should you look out for with kinesiology tape?

Tape straps made from elastic therapeutic tape help in the treatment of muscle and joint injuries. An elastic strap made of tape can prevent excessive muscle regression and provides better blood circulation. Depending on the area of application, the highly elastic tape is adhered directly to the body. However, the use of kinesiology tape should be discussed with a doctor or physiotherapist and is best applied by an experienced person.

In the case of certain complaints, with appropriate guidance by professionals and anatomical knowledge, treatment with kinesiology tape can also be carried out by the individual themselves. Before applying the tape, the body part in question should be shaved as smooth as possible and freshly washed. The tape can then be cut into the desired shape with scissors. Finally, the kinesiology tape is applied without tension.

What colour kinesiology tape should I buy?

Kinesiology tape is sold in rolls that are usually 5 cm wide and are suitable for most applications. For more specific applications, companies manufacturing elastic therapeutic tape also offer narrower and wider tapes.

The kinesiology tape colours are not important for the function, because the elastic plaster strip does not contain any additional active substances. So any climber, swimmer, cyclist and mountaineer can stick on kinesiology strips in their personal favourite colour. As a rule, the kinesiology tape remains stuck to the desired area for a few days and can then be removed like a plaster.
