BPA-free water bottles for hikers and cyclists

BPA-Free Water Bottles

BPA is the abbreviation for the chemical compound Bisphenol A which is common in the manufacture of plastic packaging and cans. Even in very small quantities BPA can lead to significant adverse effects on the human hormone system, and should therefore not be used in containers for storing food or drinks.

Unfortunately, in the past water bottles were often made using BPA containing materials. Hydration bladders and hydration systems were also affected and even children's drink bottles were contaminated with toxic substances. You had to switch to aluminium drink bottles or drink bottles made from stainless steel in order to find water bottles that were BPA-free.

Stainless steel and aluminium drink bottles are still a safe alternative, if you want to avoid hazardous plasticisers. When the closures are made from plastic, you should check whether they are also free from BPAs. As a rule you should find this information printed on the closure itself.

Nowadays, water bottles made from high-quality plastics are almost always BPA-free. Companies like Nalgene, SIGG or Contigo have been avoiding these harmful substances for some time, and mark their BPA-free water bottles accordingly. This means that their water bottles, hydration systems and foldable drink bottles are absolutely harmless and perfectly suitable for using to store food and drinking water.

Inexpensive water bottles, which are often promotional giveaways unfortunately often still contain BPAs. Often you may notice a strong smell coming from plastic, but for safety you should always look for information on the water bottles which explicitly states that they are BPA-free.
