Up to the highest heights with snow goggles

Snow Goggles

The higher you go, the more intense and aggressive the sunlight. Up there, regular sunglasses don't provide enough UV protection. You need glacier glasses! Glacier glasses are heavily tinted sports glasses that protect the eyes from glaring light and harmful UV rays. Whether for climbing in alpine regions, mountaineering or on the glacier - appropriate sun protection is essential for mountain sports.

What makes good glacier glasses?

As mentioned, glacier goggles are heavily tinted sports goggles. This eyewear, or at least the lenses, can be categorized by their filter class. This categorization simply describes the transparency of the lens. The filter classes range from 0 to 4, the latter referring to the strongest tint. Glacier glasses fall in this last class 4. This makes them 100% fit for high mountain use. But because of their high level of tint, glacier glasses are not suitable for driving. But the light protection alone isn't enough. High quality brand glasses also offer comprehensive UV protection. So your eyes are in the best hands even in intense sunlight.

Additional functions and the frame

In terms of lenses there's a lot to consider. Generally, glacier glass lenses are made of high-quality, shatterproof and scratch-resistant plastic. This has the advantage of being lighter than glass. Secondly, it poses less risk of injury, because it can't splinter. If it did ‘break' or you simply wanted to quickly change to another filter category, there are models which have interchangeable lenses.

Another important point is the individual functions of the lenses. In high alpine regions, the sun is directly reflected back from the ice and snow. Polarized lenses eliminate these disturbing reflections (e.g. Julbo Chameleon). Glasses with anti-fog protection (e.g. Julbo Zebra) - as the name says - ensure fog-free vision. There are also photochromic lenses. They adjust automatically to changing light conditions.

In terms of the frames, these should be light and sit comfortably. Side protection prevents sunlight penetrating through the side to the eye. A non-slip strap provides a secure grip, even with intensive movements. With high quality glacier glasses from Julbo, Uvex or other brands, your sight can wonder undisturbed over the alpine world.
