Warm winter clothing for layering

Winter clothing

For skiing, snowboarding or for everyday wear in the winter - winter clothing protects against the snow and moisture whilst also providing comfortable warmth. Ski clothing or snowboard clothing is mostly made up of several insulating layers in line with the so-called "onion principle". This means that in the same way an onion has many layers, several layers of winter clothing are worn over each other to protect the winter athlete against cold and snow. The lower layers work as a base layer on the legs and on the torso and the outer layers protect against wind and moisture.

Depending on the temperature, the mid layer can act as the perfect insulation. This second layer can help skiers and snowboarders to adjust their attire to the current weather conditions. If it gets too warm over the course of the day, then this mid layer can also be taken off and stored in a ski backpack. The perfect winter clothing in a layered system made of clothing from the likes of Arc'teryx, Icebreaker or Canada Goose might look like this:

  • 1st layer - base layers made of synthetic fibre or merino underwear are slim-fitting and guarantee comfortable warmth, good moisture exchange and great mobility. They make up the perfect base layer in combination with ski socks or snowboard socks.
  • 2nd layer - the second layer consists of fleece jumpers, hoodies or long sleeves made of merino wool for additional insulation. The mid layer is not quite as slim-fitting as the base layer and allows for functional moisture wicking. That is why fleece, synthetic fibres and merino wool work so well as a second layer. Elastic types of fleece like Polartec Power Stretch or Polartec Power Grid ensure a great combination of high thermal output and low weight.

  • Winter jackets - all types of winter jacket, ski jacket, snowboard jacket, PrimaLoft jacket and down jacket are the perfect outer layer as they are great for both heat and weather protection. Breathable membranes like the Gore-Tex and waterproof as well as windproof materials help to keep winter athletes dry and warm. Special features like an integrated powder skirt, lined hoods and warm pockets are useful, comfortable and practical. Sealed zips and ventilation openings make the winter jackets incredibly versatile to use. Long winter coats are also very suitable for wearing every day in the winter.
  • Winter trousers - ski trousers and snowboard trousers not only serve as insulation, but also effectively protect against moisture, snow, ice and wind. Special reinforcements also make them very durable. Integrated gaiters and reinforcements on the leg ends make them perfect for deep snow, ski touring and crampons. Integrated suspenders ensure the winter trousers won't slide around.
  • Winter boots and ski boots - ski touring shoes, ski boots and winter boots are an individual piece in every winter wardrobe. There are different winter boots, snowboarding Boots and ski boots that need to be worn depending on the type of sport being done.
  • Gloves and beanies - warm beanies and warm as well as waterproof gloves for skiers and snowboarders keep fingers, hands and heads warm. Ski gloves are mostly very well insulated and can also be used in more extreme temperatures. Winter gloves for everyday use made of fleece or merino wool are, on the other hand insulated much less, as they don't need as much protection against moisture and wind.
  • Sunglasses and ski goggles - sunglasses and ski goggles are part and parcel of winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Sporty snow goggles not only protect against unpleasant drafts, but also against damaging UV rays in the mountains. Specially tinted and polarised lenses also create a higher contrast in poor lighting conditions.
