- Stabilizes the foot
- Good grip
- Recommended use
These have taken everything I've thrown at them in their stride, from climbing around Different to scrambling in the Cuillins and drinking and dancing! Well worth it and they come in Cobalt blue too!
Superb shoes, be careful with sizing though
I am extremely impressed with these shoes after about a month of ownership and use for hiking on paved and rocky surfaces and slopes, and general outdoor wear. They are made in China, but are of very high quality. The uppers are relatively thick, durable suede, and linings are good quality fabric which look like they won't wear through easily. The rubber rand goes most of the way around the sidewalls of the shoes, providing excellent abrasion resistance, added stiffness and a measure of water resistance. The heel counters are very stiff and there are also rubber overlays around the backs of the heels. The pull-tabs on both the tongue and heel are good features which aid putting on and adjusting the fit, and the lace-to-toe closure offers easy customization of fit adjustment - you can have a loose fit for casual walking, and a very tight secure fit for challenging climbs.
The soles have an excellent pattern for general hiking and use, not too aggressive and fairly low profile, so with the EVA midsole they have an excellent combination of stiffness and flexibility. They bend naturally with the foot motion and allow you to get some ground feel, but protect you from sharp rocks. They give a lot of grip and confidence when hiking on slopes and rocky ground.
I have not used them in wet weather yet. I suspect that they would get soaked fairly quickly in heavy rain. There is a Goretex version available for those needing more water resistance.
Regarding sizing, they are quite a small fitting in both the length and width. My foot is 11.25 inches long and 4.3 inches at the widest point (when relaxed), so "officially" I am US 12. I ordered size US 13.5 in these shoes and they fit very well, are very comfortable with NO toe bump into the front of the shoe when descending. So I would recommend going up 1 or 1.5 sizes from true size for a proper fit, especially if your feet are wider than average.
They come in a variety of very cool colours - mine are the "jeans / black" colourway. They have an athletic and stylish appearance, a hint of the "rock climber" aura and unusual enough to get noticed and commented on but not embarrassingly so.
This will definitely be my "go-to" pair of shoes for hiking and general outdoor activities!
