Hi Ann,
All waterproof garments which use a hardshell membrane similar to this one need to be maintained. The DWR treatment is a vital part of why any waterproof hardshell remains waterproof and this will be removed with washing and over the course of normal use. This parka also uses a DWR treatment which is PFC free, kind to the enviornment but not as long lasting as the older highly chemical based DWR treatments. It's therefore important to revive the DWR treatment regularly in order to maintain that pearling effect , waterproofing and breathability.
