Outdoor belts for hillwalking and trekking tours

Outdoor belts

To prevent trekking trousers from slipping down while hillwalking, hikers secure their trousers with lightweight belts made of webbing, elastic belts or robust belts made of leather and synthetic leather. In addition to various synthetic webbing or leather straps, hikers can choose from a wide variety of closure systems and strap buckles.

Outdoor belts made of leather or synthetic leather are often equipped with classic pin buckles, where the pin in the belt hole ensures the optimal waist size. For textile belts and webbing belts, hillwalking gear companies such as Mammut or Fjällräven like to use buckles with pin buckles or double D-rings that can be individually and steplessly adjusted.

Trekking belt in optimal length and width

Belts for hillwalking trousers are available in different lengths and widths. Some belts are so elastic that they can be used universally, but hikers should first measure their waist size for other hiking belts. As a rule of thumb, about 15 cm should be added to the waist size. This results in a belt length that is neither too short nor unnecessarily long.

The width of trekking belt you choose depends on personal taste and your own walking gear. Not all belt loops on hillwalking and walking trousers are wide enough for wide belts. However, an outdoor belt should not be too narrow either, otherwise there is a risk that it will cut in easily whilst running or when sitting. Most hikers feel very comfortable with a belt width between 3 cm and 4 cm.

Elastic hillwalking belts or indestructible leather belts

Belts for walking trousers with a slightly stretchy material offer very good freedom of movement. They are also ideal for climbing and cycling. They are often equipped with particularly compact and flat buckles so that they are not felt under the hip belt of a backpack and cannot get caught. Elastic webbing made of synthetic materials is the best option for an outdoor belt for kids. With colours and designs that children will love, they are also visually perfect for kids.

Leather belts are very popular with hikers because they are durable and comfortable to wear. The elasticity is lower than with elastic webbing, but the fit and high-quality look are always in demand for trekking and hillwalking. An outdoor belt made of leather will be a reliable companion for many years.
