These have a solid protective sole, but with a really interesting "live" feel that moves the foot and encourages it to rolll a bit - I think that's the sole. Feels very good to walk on. IT's reasonably flexible and not cushioned - so in the end I didn't buy it because my arthritic toes need more stabilizing and protecting. But it's the shoe I would love to wear when walking fast. It's like an elevated barefoot shoe that's grown ump and able to cope with hard core mountain situations. Bravo Salewa.
