Proven climbing shoes for beginners

The Tarantula from La Sportiva are versatile climbing shoes, especially for beginners. Those who have just discovered climbing and bouldering do not need super-aggressive shoes, but rather shoes that forgive technical mistakes and support your feet in building up climbing strength. And the Tarantula climbing shoes achieve all of that flawlessly. They are extremely tough and designed to support your foot muscles. They are most suitable for sport climbing in the hall, but you will also have a lot of fun with them while bouldering indoors.

Unlike many other entry-level models, the Tarantula are a touch more aggressively designed. They boast slight asymmetry and light pre-tensioning. So if your abilities progress quickly, you can also tackle the odd more difficult project with these shoes as well. Perfect for those who mean business! On the other hand, the special FriXion Black rubber sole is relatively stiff in order to relieve your feet when climbing on the vertical.

These shoes feature a fit that is best suited to those with medium width feet. The shape of your foot is less important with these shoes. Whether you have Greek, Roman or Egyptian-shaped feet, these shoes should fit you well in the correct size.

The Tarantula are perfect for anyone who wants to start climbing. They are specially designed for feet that are not yet used to climbing on the vertical and therefore need some support. At the same time, they are so comfortable that you can even wear them during longer training sessions.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Climbing shoes for beginners
  • Ideal for sport climbing in the hall
  • Good support
  • Slightly more aggressive than comparable models
  • For medium width feet

Brilliant shoe for beginners to experienced

This was in fact my first pair of climbing shoes that I bought back when I began climbing (with laces). My first pair lasted me about 1 year of fairly constant use, mostly indoor bouldering, before giving in to the wear and tear I put them through. I also used them for trad and sport climbing where the performed brilliantly. Having bought other shoes that are "more advanced", I'm returning to these for their comfort for longer days at the crag!

They're extremely comfortable, durable, and can handle a range of types of climbs, performing best on vertical / slabby climbs but can do well on some overhangs. I also very much like the back of the shoe which performs well doing heel hooks. They are a little weaker for toe hooks, but then these shoes aren't designed for that type of climbing, and the little bit of rubber over the big toe does help.

Overall, I find myself buying these shoes again for their comfort, durability and versatility. They can be worn for hours and withstand quite a bit of abuse before your toes begin to poke through (you can of course get them resoled!). I certainly recommend them for a beginner climber looking for a shoe to carry them through the early stages and up to when you start climbing harder. I also recommend them to more advanced climbers looking for shoes that have great mileage, are comfortable, and can cope relatively well with harder sends. An excellent bang for buck.
