I took this to Africa recently and before I jumped in the deep end I tested on safe flavoured water and fluids, the flavours were still evident and so was the colouring so I doubt the virus claims. I now use it on hikes in the UK where I'm more confident it can perform safely. I watched videos before I purchased and they were claiming crystal clear water from filthy puddles yet I couldn't get mine to change the colour on coffee or blackcurrant juice, so while that may be or not be normal I don't have the 100% confidence that grayl do.

The information from says GRAYL improves clarity and taste, not eliminates. I've used this in some pretty dodgy water sources and never had an issue.
