There’s probably hardly an alpine climber in the world who hasn’t used the ATC Guide from Black Diamond. Sure, there are more alternatives out there now than ever before, but if you want to experience the mother of all alpine tube-style belay devices, there’s no way around the Guide. The new 2019 version only weighs 80 grams, so you’ll always find a spot for it on your harness. The oval geometry makes for easy handling. No matter whether you are paying out rope, belaying seconds or abseiling, the ATC Guide will perform beautifully. The mandatory braking grooves provide great hold and stopping power. If you’re into multi-pitch climbing, you’ll really appreciate the guide mode, which lets you belay one or two seconding climbers off an anchor. You can use the eye hole on the body of the belay device to release the blocking of the rope, which can be useful when lowering a follower. Regardless of whether you’re trad climbing on Welsh slate or climbing in the Alps, the ATC Guide is a must!

Easily my favourite tubular device I've used as of yet. very light yet still accommodating a varied size of ropes, handles like a charm on 9.5mm ropes and below.
I however did find that on thicker ropes (10 to 11mm) the rope sometimes would get 'stuck' when under lighter loads, requiring you to lift the rope higher then I would be comfortably with which the device would then rather suddenly begin functioning. This only ever seemed to happen when letting down a lighter climbing partner (below 60kg).
