I have been using the previous version of Exped Ultra 5R which is the Exped Winter Synmat HL. After five years and eleven months of light use ( approximately 35 days maximum of total use ) it developed a bulge at the center - lengthwise (the central lamination adhesion failed ). I had always inflated the mattress with the pump sack and had always aired it after each use. I contacted Exped and they will not replace the mattress since it is out of the warranty for 11 months. I would not buy Exped again after this, but I received the new version ( Exped Ultra 5R ) as a gift. The new version is very similar to the old version and the advantages are the following:
- Very comfortable to sleep in ( despite being 7cm thick instead of 9cm ),
- The fabric is not slippery,
- The two outwardly thicker baffles hold the user in place
- Easy to inflate with the superb Schnozzel Pump sack that also serves as a dry clothes stuff sack.
- The new version has two valves, one for inflation and micro adjustments and one for deflation which makes the deflation process much quicker than the previous version which only had one valve.
- The mattress insulates very well, you can feel the warmth radiating back.
On the drawbacks:
- Fabric is only 20d, however had not have had any punctures but I always sleep in a tent with an extra footprint.
- Warranty is only 5 years as opposed to lifetime warranty of Thermarest, Nemo, Big Agnes mattresses.
- The two outwardly baffles do not have insulation, however since I chose the wide version that is not felt during use.
- A bit of a hassle to fit the mattress in the stuff sack.
