Swim briefs for swimming, beachwear and water sports

Swim briefs

While ambitious swimmers tend to reach for tight-fitting swim briefs in order to offer the water as little resistance as possible while swimming, many surfers and recreational athletes also like to reach for wide-cut swimming trunks and board shorts. Tight and wide-cut swim briefs come in different lengths, different materials and with individually tailored details.

Swim shorts or boardshorts often feature a liner made of air-permeable mesh fabric and are equipped with side pockets and back pockets. They are just as suitable for use on the water as they are in the water and are also great to wear as athletic shorts or casual shorts in summer. Boardshorts for women are usually cut a little shorter, while some boardshorts for men can even reach to the knees.

Practical swimwear for water sports enthusiasts

In warm water, boardshorts are great for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing. In combination with elasticated surf shirts, they form the ideal clothing for water sports enthusiasts. In cooler water, however, surfers protect themselves from the cold with a wetsuit. Boardshorts are not suitable for wearing under a wetsuit.

Instead, kiters, surfers and divers wear tight swimming trunks under their wetsuits, with half-length or short legs, so that they don't experience any unpleasant pressure points that could form in the wetsuit. Female surfers analogously reach for swimming trunks for women, swim briefs or athletic bikinis. On the other hand, female swimmers may wear swimming costumes under a wetsuit to ensure optimal freedom of movement and an athletic performance when surfing, kitesurfing and wakeboarding.

Functional swim shorts and swimming trunks

Swimming trunks are made for use in chlorinated water and salt water. They resist UV radiation very well, are made from durable materials and impress with an athletic performance. Manufacturers of swimming trunks, such as adidas or Speedo, offer a wide variety of models for all areas of use and support both competition-oriented professionals and enthusiastic recreational athletes.

When selecting materials, manufacturers place particular emphasis on high stretchability, through stretchable Lycra or elastane, and quick drying properties. To protect the synthetic fibres of the swimming trunks and keep the vibrant colours and designs looking good for a long time, swimming trunks should always be washed in clear water after bathing or swimming. This rinses out any residue of chlorine, salt or sun cream and the swimwear can then dry out in the shade.
