Softshell vests for guaranteed freedom of movement!

Softshell Gilets

Whether you’re hiking a beautiful Alpine route, on a challenging trek or on a long bike ride, a softshell vest is the perfect companion. Not only do they keep your body warm, but full freedom of movement is also guaranteed. A softshell vest can quickly be placed into any backpack because it hardly takes up space and is the perfect option in situations where you don’t necessarily need a jacket, but need something for on the go. The warm vests are characterized by their windproof, yet very breathable fabric, which means sweat will be transported away from your skin to the surface to where it can evaporate. In addition, lightweight softshell vests won’t weigh you down and are made of quick-drying fabrics that won’t soak up any moisture. They’re typically water-repellent and in some cases even waterproof. What makes softshell vests so great?

A softshell vest normally consists of many layers: a soft, brushed lining that feels nice on the skin and a partly water-repellent outer layer that’s built to protect you against the wind. As a result, softshell vests are perfect for mild temperatures. In addition, they can be combined wonderfully with a T-shirt, long-sleeve or fleece. Plus, when taking a break during your adventure, the softshell vest will prevent you from cooling down and getting cold. Most importantly, you won’t even need to take the vest off during your break because the vest’s excellent ventilation will keep you comfortable. As for the fabric, it’s typically very durable and abrasion-resistant, which means it can withstand contact with a backpack, it’s very stretchy for excellent mobility and thanks to the use of elastane, it’s also quick-drying.

Types of fabrics

Softshell vests come in a variety of fabrics, so you’ll want to choose one that's ideal for the outdoor activity you have planned. Softshell vests made of very fine, breathable fabrics are perfect for trips with a light backpack. These vests are made of a clever blend consisting of a windproof front and a breathable back. Moreover, it can get particularly cold whilst mountaineering, so you'll need a vest with a warmer lining or a slightly thicker fabric. Some softshell vests even come with laminated seams and keep wind and water out for longer. In terms of weather protection, these vests doesn’t offer as much as a hardshell vest, but they're perfectly adequate for drizzling rain or light snow.
