Question from David

Looking for a front and rear recommendation for UK riding.

Hi I'm looking for a good tyre option for both front and rear for riding UK trails and forest tracks. Currently running Maxis 2.8s on a hardtail. Want something 2.6 and fairly fast rolling but still up for some mud etc.

Hi David,

For fast rolling but still decent grip a good trick is to go thicker/heavy tread up front, and then thinner/heavy tread at the back. This still climbs well but rolls far better and descends rapidly with good grip - plus it's easier to break the rear grip on tight switchbacks.

For the front I'd recommend the Nobby Nic 2.6: https://www.alpinetrek.co.uk/schwalbe-nobby-nic-275-65-584-fal-snakes-addixspg-tl-e-cyclocross-tyre/

And then for the back the Hans Dampf 2.35: https://www.alpinetrek.co.uk/schwalbe-hans-dampf-275-x-235-addix-soft-evolution-snakes-cyclocross-tyre/

This is a savage combo for UK trail riding. The Hans Dampf can be kept pretty high pressure for low rolling resistance whilst still have decent cornering grip due to the large side lugs. I've used that combo on a hardtail for a lot of Peak district riding with good effect.

Hope this helps!
