I really suggest to get this belay device. It adds extra safety when belaying and lowering down as you adjust the speed using the lever. The little lever simply pulls the device in to position to release and therefore lower rope - it does not have any moving parts inside to squeeze rope or anything like that, so do not mistake this. It does not mean hands-free braking either, it simply gives you more control over the speed that the rope is given out when lowering someone. It brakes by the angle of the device that the taut rope naturally pulls it in to much like a traditional belay device such as an ATC.

I've used three GriGri 2's over the last year in my capacity as an indoor climbing instructor. They have worn incredibly well and have withstood lots of abuse (regularly dropped & smashed into the wall!) without breakage. They accept brand new and heavily used ropes of most diameters. They are essential for young kids and beginners to safeguard poor belaying technique. Highly recommended.
Looking back, there are other semi automatic belay devices on the market that are much easier to operate and are more versatile, especially if it comes to paying out slack when leading. Great for top-roping and red pointing when the climber sits on the rope a lot.

It seems everyone is using GriGris these days. I bought one so I would fit in at the local climbing wall! Actually, this device is great for a little extra security when climbing, and really handy on indoor walls when lowering smaller climbers who like a smooth ride down. Also very handy when teaching belaying, as it gives a little extra backup safety while learning.

Great for belaying on sport routes, also useful when belaying top ropes for ages.
Warning, don't get into bad habits belaying, check out all the instructions on the Petzl website re belaying and giving slack.
I upgraded from the old GriGri and this was well worth it.

First time I've tried one of these. Used for sport climbing. Easy to use, does what it's supposed to. Kicking myself for not getting one years ago.
