Product description

The weight of the Optic 48 touring backpack by Gregory is very impressive at less than 1200 grams. A very low weight for pieces of equipment is usually associated with lighter and less robust materials, a shorter life and less comfort. But that’s not always the case: people who love things light and fast won’t fail to be amazed by the Optic 48. The Optic 48 has a sturdy aluminium frame and two-layer padded shoulder and waist belts in those places where you need extra padding when carrying heavy loads. If you look at the padding of this backpack in general, you’ll find it is similar to body mapping in clothing. Places where good padding is required, are well padded. Full length padding was omitted to save on weight.

As no compromises need to be made in terms of the functionality of the touring backpack, another form of weight saving is the removable lid. This can be replaced by the very light weather protection flap, which protects the contents from moisture. Hydration system-ready, practical pockets and compartments - the very lightweight Optic 48 by Gregory has everything you need and appreciates on tour and when traveling.

Great pack overall

Carried it for 5 days on the BHT and although it was a little overkill for what you really need on a hut-to-hut hike I can say that I was glad to have it with me. Was able to pack changes of clothes for each of the days on the trail, an extra pair of pants, 2 merino fleece jackets, a down jacket, sleeping bag+liner, a body towel, personal hygiene bag, small first aid kit, a Tenba BYOB 9 containing my camera, some light trail food, plus a number of small items in the lid. You can easily carry a tent on the outside as there are a number of straps on the sides (they also go a little under the pack) and on the top (under the lid). The mesh pocket on the front is large enough to fit a jacket. The pack is very stable on the back which you'll appreciate if you have to navigate fairly acrobatic routes.

As for downsides, I found it relatively hard to fit a larger water bottle (Camelbak Chute 1L) in the side pockets if the pack is fully loaded and the contents are packed tight. You may also want to secure the bottle with a sling if you store it using the side opening of the pocket (which has a loop to be used for this purpose). The inside mesh of the carrying system is very prone to scuffing so try your best not to rub it against rocks or anything rough when you move the pack around.

    Good storage options
