Product description

The Synmat 9 from Exped is a very comfortable sleeping mat with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio that is perfect for trekking, alpine crossings and possibly even winter bivouacs in the Alps. The Exped sleeping mat series is a one of the true classics and comes in various thicknesses, making it beloved by many mountaineers and trekkers. In fact, it's so popular that it was even awarded the Outdoor Industry Award in Gold in 2010!
The Synmat 9 is 9cm thick and has a sturdy baffle construction with microfibre fleece laminated on both sides. Thus, it is incredibly warm and comfortable. What's more, the self-inflating mat comes with an integrated pump and flat valves for quick deflation and individual adjustments. <bY
In addition, the mat itself is made of particularly robust materials. All seams are high-frequency welded, which is the strongest among non-sewn fabrics. The mat's upper has an embossed honeycomb structure made of brushed polyester, which serves to prevent slippage.

Like all mats from Exped, the surface of the SynMat 9 has also been equipped with the high-quality, airtight, moisture-resistant and hydrolysis-resistant polyether film laminate that is built to last.

Love it - dont need to fully inflate it

This is a fantastic mat - it is comfortable, warm, and non-slip. It is slightly large and therefore awkward to pack but that's the price of buying a mat with a higher R value.

A good example of the non-slip detail - one weekend I was camping on a slight hill, my mat slid down the tent but I stayed on it while my friends had slipped straight off their other-brand mats.

Two points to consider before buying. First - inflating the mat is by hand. It's straightforward but can hurt your wrists if you have issues with them. Also, smaller hands mean more pumps... you alternatively could use a book or ask a friend to help.

Second, if you cannot sleep well on baffle-like structures, you won't like it especially when fully inflated. Persons with larger bottom/upper halves may also have an issue with it fully inflated. A way around this is to deflate the mat to what might be considered 6/7cm in thickness which gives enough room to mould into it. I also found this to be the most comfortable.

  • Advantages
    Easy to inflate
    Insulates well
    Surface not slippery
  • Disadvantages
    Packed dimensions
