target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bike backpack <\/a>(if necessary) <\/label><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that this isn\u2019t <strong>the ultimate<\/strong> packing list for all your road cycling tours. Each trip can vary greatly from one another and people have different needs. However, this list does include all the basic equipment required for your ride. It&#8217;s best to make a <strong>note<\/strong> after your tour of what worked and what didn&#8217;t, then you&#8217;ll have a <strong>more personalized<\/strong> list for next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backpack: yes or no?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The clearer you are about your expectations, the better prepared you\u2019ll be. During a tour, the goal isn\u2019t to have a large <strong>backpack<\/strong> with all of your gear, but rather just to have the essentials with you. An experienced road cyclist will very likely decide against a backpack when possible. But, the decision whether to bring a backpack or not is up to you. Here\u2019s a <strong>list of questions<\/strong> to help with your decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day before your departure, you should briefly go through the planned tour in your head. What will the <strong>weather<\/strong> be like? Will there be a <strong>heatwave<\/strong>, <strong>mixed weather<\/strong> or <strong>continuous rain<\/strong>? Will you be riding at higher altitudes and are expecting cold winds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lighting: yes or no?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you be riding in the dark and therefore need a <strong>light<\/strong>? If you know you\u2019ll be passing through many <strong>tunnels<\/strong>, then a light is a must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you know the route inside out, do you want to travel primarily on <strong>country roads<\/strong> with good signage or will you pass through an unfamiliar <strong>big city<\/strong>? What orientation equipment will you use to find your way around? You can use a <strong>smartphone<\/strong> or a <strong>cycle computer<\/strong> with navigation features instead of using a bulky map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Provisions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong> is another important thing to think about. If you won\u2019t be riding by any <strong>petrol stations<\/strong>, <strong>hotels<\/strong> or <strong>supermarkets<\/strong> over longer periods of time, then make sure you have enough <strong>food<\/strong> and <strong>water<\/strong>. Whenever you have the chance, you should fill up your bottle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also know your <strong>limits<\/strong>. Of course, you can wear <strong>short clothes<\/strong> in the pouring rain, but does that really sound pleasant to you? Are you really willing to be less <strong>comfortable<\/strong> just so you can travel light?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening before your tour, you should test out all your gear, check your set-up and see if your stuff really does fit in your <strong>jersey pockets<\/strong>. If they don\u2019t all fit, then you\u2019ll either need to go through your equipment again and <strong>re-evaluate<\/strong> or <strong>use a backpack<\/strong>. Once you\u2019re done with that, <strong>pump up the tyres<\/strong> again, check the <strong>gears<\/strong> and <strong>brakes<\/strong>, and <strong>oil the chain<\/strong>. It\u2019s also worth taking a look at the condition of the tyres. If they\u2019re completely worn out or already have <strong>small cuts<\/strong>, now is your last chance to change them.
