So, we would like to introduce you to a material that\u2019s been around for decades and is often found in fleece clothing: Thinsulate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly is Thinsulate? When is it used and what can it do?<\/h2>\n\n\n

Thinsulate<\/b> is an <\/span>insulating<\/b> microfibre fabric<\/b> developed by <\/span>3M<\/b>. This fleece fabric has been around for decades. As early as the 1960s, 3M was experimenting with microfibres. In the 1970s, Thinsulate Insulation technology was used for the first time to produce ski clothing. Thinsulate was also around at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. In the 1990s, 3M expanded the Thinsulate Insulation product range, producing a <\/span>variety of materials<\/b> that are used in a wide range of sectors, from occupational safety and sports to fashion. You\u2019ll find these as <\/span>linings<\/b> in <\/span>winter clothing<\/b> and <\/span>sleeping bags<\/b> as well as in <\/span>fabrics<\/b> for <\/span>beanies<\/b>, <\/span>balaclavas<\/b> and <\/span>gloves<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The science behind the material<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thinsulate Insulation is either made of <\/span>polyester<\/b> or a blend of polyester and <\/span>polypropylene<\/b>. Thinsulate consists of significantly <\/span>smaller fibres<\/b> than conventional polyester. With a diameter of about 15 micrometres, these fibres are about ten times smaller than other synthetic fibres. As a result, denser materials can be created. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This tight structure <\/span>reduces the heat flow<\/b> between the individual fibres. In other words, body heat is radiated back from the fibres and the material will <\/span>keep you warm even at low temperatures<\/b>. When comparing it to down that has the same thickness, the manufacturer says that Thinsulate provides 1.5 times as much warmth. In addition, the material is both <\/span>breathable<\/b> and <\/span>moisture-repellent<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Areas of use and types of products<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thinsulate Insulation is divided into several different material types. These differ in their area of application and have specially tailored properties. The following types are mainly used in the outdoor and mountain sports sectors:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type B<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This material is particularly <\/span>durable<\/b> and <\/span>thin<\/b>. Due to its resilience and <\/span>good insulating capacity<\/b> in a compressed state, it\u2019s mainly used to create <\/span>footwear<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type C<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Thinsulate Insulation type C is particularly suitable for <\/span>leisure and outdoor clothing<\/b>. This fleece fabric has a particularly<\/span> high insulating capability<\/b> and is also <\/span>soft<\/b>. The <\/span>low weight<\/b> and thinness make it ideal for <\/span>jackets<\/b>, <\/span>beanies<\/b> and <\/span>gloves<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type P<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The material type P has numerous practical properties. Not only is it <\/span>warm<\/b> and <\/span>durable<\/b>, but it\u2019s also <\/span>easy to care for<\/b>. As a result, these <\/span>garments<\/b> are ideal for <\/span>tough conditions<\/b> in the outdoors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type FR<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The special feature of type FR is its <\/span>flame-retardant property<\/b>. It\u2019s mainly used for <\/span>workwear<\/b>, but you may also find it in <\/span>outdoor clothing<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type TIP<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This material is mainly used for bedding, such as <\/span>duvets<\/b> and <\/span>pillows<\/b>, but also for <\/span>sleeping bags<\/b>. Its <\/span>high fill power<\/b> offers <\/span>good thermal insulation<\/b>, <\/span>comfort<\/b> and is <\/span>lightweight<\/b>. It can also be washed in the <\/span>washing machine<\/b> at a temperature of up to <\/span>60\u00b0C.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, all Thinsulate products are <\/span>relatively easy to care for <\/b>as they can be washed in the <\/span>washing machine<\/b>. However, since products such as jackets or sleeping bags usually consist of several materials and technologies, it is important to <\/span>follow<\/b> the <\/span>manufacturer’s<\/b> exact <\/span>instructions<\/b>. Manufacturers such as Holmenkol or Toko also offer detergents that are made for washing outdoor clothing. It\u2019s always best to check the washing label of each product before putting it in the wash.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
