(we’re not looking at you, old Odlo base layer)… And it’s not because the washing machine isn’t doing its job or because the wardrobe smells musty. The real problem is that unpleasant sweat odours can gradually become trapped in the fabric itself. Wondering how to get the smell of sweat out of clothes when regular washing no longer works? Where does that characteristic sweat smell come from? And most importantly, what can you do about it? Don’t worry, we’ll answer these questions and more in this article.

Sweat Smell and How It Develops

To understand how to remove sweat smell from clothes, it helps to know how the odour forms in the first place. Human sweat consists of over 99% water, plus small amounts of salts, acids, urea and sugar. In its pure form, sweat is odourless. The smell only develops once sweat begins to break down.

Our skin is home to countless bacteria. These organisms perform a variety of functions, both helpful and less desirable. Put simply, some bacteria feed on sweat and break it down. This process creates the familiar unpleasant odour that we associate with sweating.

However, these bacteria do not stay on the skin. They also transfer to clothing such as T-shirts, underwear and shoes. Once there, they continue feeding on sweat residues and producing unpleasant odours. If you want to remove sweat smell from clothing, you need to tackle the bacteria responsible.

Sweat itself is odourless. The unpleasant smell only develops when sweat is broken down by bacteria.

Materials and Odour Formation

Why do some garments start to smell more quickly than others? There can be several reasons, but the fabric often plays a major role. Functional fabrics are designed to dry quickly and remain breathable. As moisture evaporates rapidly, the water content of sweat is released into the air. The remaining components stay behind in the fabric and build up over time. This includes the bacteria that break down sweat and cause unpleasant smells.

Natural fibres such as wool and cotton behave a little differently. Merino wool naturally has antibacterial properties. This is partly due to keratin, a protein found in wool fibres that helps inhibit bacterial growth. Cotton also tends to retain fewer sweat residues within its fibres, reducing the food source available to odour-causing bacteria.

The keratin found in merino wool helps reduce the bacteria that cause sweat odours.

Sweat Smell Even After Washing

The easiest way to remove sweat smell from clothes is usually with a washing machine. In most cases, a normal wash cycle is enough to leave your clothing smelling fresh again. However, older and heavily used garments can sometimes develop persistent odours that remain even after washing. The reason is simple: standard detergents and low-temperature wash cycles often fail to eliminate all bacteria. Clothing may smell fine immediately after washing, only for the odour to return as soon as you start wearing it again.

So it might be time to reach for a few tried-and-tested household remedies.

How to Remove Sweat Smell From Clothes Without Washing

Sometimes you don’t even need to wash your clothing to make it smell fresh again. Here are a few ways to remove odours without using a washing machine or chemical treatments.

Air It Out in the Sun

It may sound obvious, but fresh air and sunlight can be surprisingly effective. This works particularly well with technical clothing and lightweight fabrics. Fresh air, especially when there is a gentle breeze, helps disperse unpleasant odours. At the same time, UV rays from sunlight can help reduce the bacteria responsible for the smell.

Best for: Almost all types of clothing, provided you do not leave them in direct sunlight for too long, as colours may fade.

Drying laundry in the sun can help remove unpleasant odours.

Freeze It

If airing and regular washing are not enough, freezing can be a useful alternative. By exposing garments to very low temperatures, you can combat odour-causing bacteria without subjecting delicate fabrics to high wash temperatures or aggressive detergents. Simply place the garment in a freezer bag and leave it in the freezer overnight or for around 24 hours. Afterwards, remove it from the bag and allow it to air out naturally.

Best for: Delicate materials such as wool and silk, as well as functional clothing.

Removing Sweat Smell from Clothing: Traditional Home Remedies

If airing doesn’t work and a freezer isn’t available, there are still a few classic household solutions worth trying.

One important note before you start: all of the methods below may affect delicate fabrics or colours. Test them on an inconspicuous area first if you want to be on the safe side.

Baking Soda for Sweat Odours

Baking soda is a household favourite thanks to its ability to neutralise odours and help combat bacteria. It is particularly suitable for lighter-coloured garments because it also has mild bleaching properties. If you want to remove both sweat stains and unpleasant smells, baking soda can be a great option.

Use approximately 10g of baking soda per 5 litres of water. Mix the solution in a large bowl or bucket and soak the garment for several hours. Afterwards, wash it as usual. Alternatively, add one or two spoonfuls of baking soda directly to the detergent compartment during a normal wash cycle.

Best for: Light-coloured and durable fabrics.

Vinegar Removes Odour-Causing Bacteria

Vinegar is well known for tackling unpleasant smells around the home, making it a good choice for stubborn sweat odours in clothing. Mix light-coloured vinegar with water at a ratio of 1:4 and soak the garment in the solution. Vinegar essence can also be used, but it is much more concentrated and must be diluted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Afterwards, wash the clothing as normal.

Best for: Garments with severe odour problems.

Vinegar essence can also help remove sweat smells, but be careful with the dosage.

Citric Acid for a Fresher Smell

Citric acid helps freshen laundry and eliminate odours. It can also help restore white or light-coloured garments that have become yellowed over time. You can usually buy citric acid powder in supermarkets or pharmacies. To soak clothing, dissolve 20g of citric acid per litre of water in a bowl or bucket and leave the garment immersed for around 30 minutes. Afterwards, wash the clothing as usual. Citric acid can also be added directly to white laundry during machine washing, although pre-soaking is generally more effective.

Best for: Yellowed garments with persistent odours.

How to Remove Body Odour from Clothes: Detergents and Wash Temperatures

Not interested in home remedies? No problem. You can also remove sweat smell from clothing using the right washing method.

High Washing Temperatures

If the garment can tolerate it, washing at a higher temperature is one of the most effective ways to remove odour-causing bacteria. Most bacteria die at temperatures of around 60°C or higher. Keep in mind that some modern washing machines do not always maintain full temperature throughout a standard 60°C programme. If possible, choose the hottest setting recommended on the care label, typically between 60°C and 90°C, or use a dedicated hygiene cycle.

Best for: Durable fabrics such as towels, underwear and cotton sleeping bag liners.

A higher wash temperature or a dedicated hygiene programme can help to remove sweat odours from clothes.

Specialist and Hygiene Detergents

Specialist hygiene detergents can also be effective, although they should be used sparingly. Some products contain substances that may not be fully removed during wastewater treatment and can place additional strain on the environment. Using them is straightforward: simply replace your regular detergent with a hygiene detergent and follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Best for: Easy-care fabrics with significant bacterial contamination.

As you can see, there are many ways to get sweat smell out of clothes.
