Problems can arise when misalignments develop, for example due to weak foot muscles.

With overpronation, the arch of the foot collapses too far under load. This increases stress on the knees and shins. One way to spot possible overpronation is by checking the wear pattern on your running shoes. If the inside of the sole is noticeably more worn than the rest, this may indicate overpronation.

At the other end of the spectrum is supination (underpronation). Here, there is very little inward rolling movement, which reduces the body’s natural shock absorption. Once again, the sole of your shoe can provide a clue: if wear is concentrated on the outside edge, underpronation may be the cause.

If you’re experiencing discomfort or you’re unsure which category applies to you, a professional gait analysis can help provide clarity.

Supination during the flight phase.

How to Find the Right Running Shoes

If you’re confident that you have one of the gait patterns described above, you can start looking for suitable running shoes. In simple terms, heel-to-toe drop refers to the difference in height between the heel and forefoot of a running shoe. This difference influences how your foot strikes the ground. Shoes with a larger drop tend to encourage a heel strike, while lower-drop shoes promote a midfoot or forefoot strike, depending on your running style.

For runners with overpronation, a moderate heel-to-toe drop of 6 to 8 mm is often recommended, as it can make the transition from heel strike to toe-off feel more stable.

Special Considerations for Trail Running

If you’re primarily a trail runner and spend most of your time away from tarmac, the requirements for your footwear change considerably. In fact, you’ll notice that very few trail running shoes come with pronation support. The reason is simple: roots, rocks and uneven terrain constantly force your feet to adapt, and every step is slightly different. In these conditions, pronation support can sometimes be counterproductive, as it may slightly reduce the flexibility your feet need to maintain secure footing on technical terrain.

The Focus Shifts to Other Features

Reliable grip through a sticky rubber compound and deep lugs.

Protection from reinforced areas that shield your feet against rocks and sharp edges.

A low heel-to-toe drop for better ground sensitivity and closer contact with the terrain.

Conclusion: Analyse First, Then Run

No matter where or how you like to run, understanding your foot mechanics can help you stay comfortable and injury-free over the long term. Once you know your pronation type, choosing the right footwear becomes much easier, allowing you to enjoy running with confidence for many miles to come.

SHOP RUNNING SHOES NOW

Whether you’re just getting into running or you’ve been clocking up the miles for years, sooner or later you’ll come across the term pronation.
