The Eibsee hike in Bavaria ticks all the boxes. Nestled at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, the Eibsee is one of the region’s most popular hiking destinations. And with good reason. Its turquoise waters, wooded islands and sweeping views of the Wetterstein mountains make it a true natural treasure. Best of all, you can stroll around the lake at your own pace. In this guide, you’ll discover everything you need to know for your hike around the Eibsee, along with the highlights that await you.

Eibsee: even the ducks know where the most beautiful spot is

Why the Eibsee hike is so special

A quick glance at social media shows just how much people love the Eibsee. Few other lakes in the Bavarian Alps are photographed and shared as often. No wonder this Insta-famous lake has become a symbol of the Alpine region. Yet it is more than just a picture-perfect backdrop. It offers a genuine experience of nature.

The name Eibsee comes from the German name for yew trees, that once grew in abundance along its shores. Today, only a handful remain in the surrounding forests. What many visitors don’t realise is that the lake is a relic of the last ice age, formed by a massive rockslide on the northern side of the Zugspitze. This event reshaped the landscape, creating eight islands and numerous shallow areas that can still be seen today. The blend of geological history and alpine scenery makes the Eibsee one of Germany’s most fascinating hiking destinations.

Spectacular views of the Eibsee and the Zugspitze

Eibsee in Grainau: How to get there

The Eibsee lies in the municipality of Grainau in Upper Bavaria, just 10 kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Its easy access by car or public transport makes it perfect for a day trip or a weekend escape.

By car

From Munich, the drive takes around 1.5 hours via the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From Garmisch, follow the B23 to Grainau and turn onto Eibseestraße. Two large (paid) public car parks are located directly at the cable car base station by the lake. They are open from 5 am to 10 pm. Arriving early is recommended, as the lake is especially busy at weekends, in summer and during the holiday season.

By public transport

Regular trains run from Munich Central Station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with a journey time of about 1 hour 20 minutes. From there, take the Zugspitzbahn, which brings you directly to Eibsee station in around 40 minutes. This historic cog railway has been carrying hikers and day trippers to the Alps for more than 90 years. It is one of Germany’s highest railway lines and offers stunning views of the Wetterstein mountains along the way. Full details of operating hours and timetables are available on their official website.

Alternatively, bus line 9606 runs directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Eibsee stop. The Eibsee bus (line 9840) also operates regularly along the same route, offering a convenient service with several stops in Grainau and the surrounding area. This option is ideal for anyone holding a Grainau guest card, which even allows free travel. Please note, however, that the guest card is not valid within Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself. For journeys there, you will need a separate ticket for the green local buses. A full overview of timetables and regional bus connections is available on the Ammergau Alps timetable page.

A small waterfall deep in the forest, a quiet companion along the way showing how vibrant tranquillity can be

The two most beautiful Eibsee hikes

The Eibsee offers a wide range of hiking options for all fitness levels. Whether you prefer a gentle stroll along the shore or a more demanding mountain hiking tour, the paths around the lake are as varied as the landscape itself. For me, it was the perfect balance of a relaxed nature experience with a touch of adventure. Here are two popular Eibsee hikes that I particularly enjoyed.

Hike 1: The Eibsee circular trail

The classic walk around the Eibsee combines alpine scenery with a holiday atmosphere reminiscent of the Caribbean. This route takes you all the way around the lake, rewarding you with stunning views of turquoise water, eight small islands and the mighty Zugspitze massif. The trail is wonderfully varied: at times it hugs the shoreline, at others it winds through shady forest sections filled with birdsong and fresh mountain air. Along the way, you will come across small waterfalls and lakes such as the Steingringpriel and the Drachenseelein. These hidden waters provide fascinating glimpses of alpine flora, adding extra charm to the landscape.

Numerous benches and small pebble bays invite you to pause and enjoy the surroundings. If you wish, you can even take a refreshing dip. Swimming is permitted at the Eibsee, and the cool water is a delight on warm summer days.

The circular trail is well maintained and easily accessible with a pushchair or bicycle. At the end of your walk, it is well worth stopping at the Eibsee Pavillon restaurant on the lakeshore. With views of the water and surrounding mountains, it is the perfect place to relax after your hike.

Tour details:

Length: approx. 7.5 km

Duration: approx. 90 minutes

Difficulty: easy, suitable for all fitness levels. Then a detour to the Höllentalklamm gorge is well worth it. This is one of the most spectacular gorges in the Bavarian Alps. The tour begins at the Eibsee car park and leads via the Hammersbach district near Grainau through shady forests to the Höllentaleingangshütte hut. Here is where the actual gorge trail starts.

The path winds through the gorge, which plunges up to 150 metres deep, crossing footbridges, bridges and tunnels. Surrounded by roaring waterfalls and dramatic rock walls, the atmosphere feels almost mystical. A useful tip: bring a headlamp, as some of the tunnel sections are damp and only dimly lit.

At the end of the dramatic Höllentalklamm gorge, the trail continues uphill into the Wetterstein mountains, opening up magnificent views of the surrounding landscape. After about 30 minutes, you will reach the Höllentalangerhütte hut at 1,387 metres. It is the perfect spot to pause, rest and enjoy a hearty meal of regional specialities prepared with fresh ingredients.

The return follows the same path, giving you a fresh perspective on the gorge and forest trails. Because of its more demanding route and lower popularity, this hike is far less crowded than the Eibsee circular trail and offers a more intense alpine nature experience.

Tip: for even more impressive views, take the high trail towards Kreuzeck on your way back from the Höllentalangerhütte. It offers countless opportunities for small adventures and quiet moments away from the main trails. After your hike, take time to relax and enjoy the lake.

1. Boat tour on the Eibsee

Explore the lake from the water. At the boat rental near the start of the trail, you can hire rowing boats, pedal boats or stand-up paddleboards until 3:30 pm. The morning is especially magical when the Zugspitze reflects in the water. Arrive early, as boats are popular and sell out quickly.

2. Swimming in the crystal-clear lake

The water is refreshing and clear, though cool even in midsummer. The best swimming spots are along the circular trail, particularly in the quiet bays on the north side. Bathing shoes are recommended as the lakebed can be rocky.

3. Picnic at hidden spots

The Eibsee has many secluded corners perfect for a break. The clearings on the north shore and the flat rock slabs near the islands are especially inviting. Remember to take your rubbish with you to keep the area pristine.

4. Photo spots with panoramic views

The Eibsee is a postcard scene at any time of day. Schönbichl Island and Sassen Island with the Zugspitze and Wetterstein mountains behind them are particularly striking. Along the circular trail, you will find rocky outcrops and clearings ideal for memorable photos.

5. Trip to the Zugspitze

For a high-altitude adventure, take the cable car or cog railway to Germany’s highest peak at 2,962 metres. The last descent is between 4:45 pm and 5:45 pm, depending on the season, so plan enough time to enjoy the summit.

Insider tip: breakfast with a view of the Zugspitze

From the small Hammersbach car park, just 10 minutes from the Eibsee, you can reach a meadow with free-range cows and a stunning view of the Zugspitze.
