Its turquoise waters, wooded islands and sweeping views of the Wetterstein mountains make it a true natural treasure. Best of all, you can stroll around the lake at your own pace<\/a>. Why the Eibsee hike is so special<\/h2>\n\n

A quick glance at social media shows just how much people love the Eibsee. Few other lakes in the Bavarian Alps are photographed and shared as often. No wonder this Insta-famous lake has become a symbol of the Alpine region. Yet it is more than just a picture-perfect backdrop. It offers a genuine experience of nature.<\/p>\n\n

The name Eibsee<\/strong> comes from the German name for yew trees<\/strong>, that once grew in abundance along its shores. Today, only a handful remain in the surrounding forests. What many visitors don’t realise is that the lake is a relic of the last ice age<\/strong>, formed by a massive rockslide on the northern side of the Zugspitze. This event reshaped the landscape, creating eight islands and numerous shallow areas that can still be seen today. Eibsee in Grainau: How to get there<\/h2>\n\n

The Eibsee lies in the municipality of Grainau<\/a><\/strong> in Upper Bavaria<\/strong>, just 10 kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Its easy access by car or public transport makes it perfect for a day trip or a weekend escape.<\/p>\n\n

By car<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

From Munich, the drive takes around 1.5 hours via the A95 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen<\/a><\/strong>. From Garmisch, follow the B23 to Grainau<\/strong> and turn onto Eibseestra\u00dfe<\/strong>. Two large (paid) public car parks are located directly at the cable car base station by the lake. They are open from 5 am to 10 pm<\/strong>. Arriving early is recommended, as the lake is especially busy at weekends, in summer and during the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n

By public transport<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Regular trains run from Munich Central Station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen<\/strong>, with a journey time of about 1 hour 20 minutes. From there, take the Zugspitzbahn, which brings you directly to Eibsee station<\/strong> in around 40 minutes. This historic cog railway<\/strong> has been carrying hikers and day trippers to the Alps for more than 90 years. It is one of Germany’s highest railway lines and offers stunning views<\/strong> of the Wetterstein mountains along the way. Alternatively, bus line 9606<\/strong> runs directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Eibsee stop. The Eibsee bus (line 9840)<\/strong> also operates regularly along the same route, offering a convenient service with several stops in Grainau and the surrounding area. This option is ideal for anyone holding a Grainau guest card<\/strong><\/a>, which even allows free travel. Please note, however, that the guest card is not valid within Garmisch-Partenkirchen itself<\/strong>. For journeys there, you will need a separate ticket for the green local buses. The two most beautiful Eibsee hikes<\/h2>\n\n

The Eibsee offers a wide range of hiking options for all fitness levels<\/strong>. Whether you prefer a gentle stroll along the shore or a more demanding mountain hiking tour, the paths around the lake are as varied as the landscape itself. For me, it was the perfect balance of a relaxed nature experience with a touch of adventure<\/strong>. Here are two popular Eibsee hikes that I particularly enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n

Hike 1: The Eibsee circular trail<\/h3>\n\n

The classic walk around the Eibsee combines alpine scenery<\/strong> with a holiday atmosphere reminiscent of the Caribbean<\/strong>. This route takes you all the way around the lake, rewarding you with stunning views of turquoise water, eight small islands<\/strong> and the mighty Zugspitze massif<\/strong>. The trail is wonderfully varied: at times it hugs the shoreline, at others it winds through shady forest sections filled with birdsong and fresh mountain air. Along the way, you will come across small waterfalls<\/strong> and lakes<\/strong> such as the Steingringpriel<\/strong> and the Drachenseelein<\/strong>. These hidden waters provide fascinating glimpses of alpine flora, adding extra charm to the landscape.<\/p>\n\n

Numerous benches and small pebble bays invite you to pause and enjoy the surroundings. If you wish, you can even take a refreshing dip. Swimming is permitted at the Eibsee<\/strong>, and the cool water is a delight on warm summer days.<\/p>\n\n
