Nice and simple ATC device. I have used it for both sport and lead climbing.

Solid, versatile, easy use, reliable, and forgiving for new climbers thanks to the "teeth" in the brake channels.
This is the ATC device to learn to belay with.

This was my first belay device (although I have used a number of others; Grivel, DMM, ClimbX) and it is brilliant. Compared to others on the market the feeding out rope is, I found, the best. I currently use the DMM Pivot (as it has a guide mode, which is the only reason I have stopped using my ATC XP). Compared to the pivot, the ATC XP has a larger retention loop which seems to allow for reduced locking when giving rope (by locking I should state this is not an auto-locking device). When catching a fall the device grips the rope well whilst providing a smooth catch. Using the high-friction grooves allows for controlled lowering. Used in an abseil situation both high friction and low friction modes provide a smooth abseil. For a simple belay device I can definitely recommend this.

The XP has both high friction and normal mode (turn upside down) as well as being able to accept two ropes. Its also very light and not bulky at all. I would definitely recommend. The price and finish is also very good.
