Product description
Since Jokla is Icelandic for glacier, we can definitely say that the 66 North Jokla Parka lives up to its name! The extremely warm parka was specifically designed for extreme conditions. It's made out of high-quality, durable Cordura that has a hydrostatic head of 9,000mm, making it completely waterproof. Besides that, it wicks body moisture away from the body, thereby stabilising the temperature inside the jacket. The jacket is insulated with high-quality goose down that has a fill power of 750. An added plus is definitely the jacket's light weight combined with its excellent insulation. The cold doesn't stand a chance! Down is also very packable, which makes it ideal for trips to cold places! The hood on the Jokla Parka can be adjusted, and the fox fur trim, which protects your face from snow, is detachable. So that that cold air can't sneak into the inside of the parka, there are draw cords at the hem and waist. The cuffs are also adjustable. Sundry little items that should always be easily accessible can be stored in any of the generous pockets. If you're looking to be perfectly equipped for extremely cold conditions, you should definitely take a closer look at the 66 North Jokla Parka!

Serious warmth and well designed

This is an expensive item of clothing and I did some research before buying. Canada Goose is the only real comparator at this level, and the Jokla compared well in being fully waterproof, a longer mid-thigh length, wear-resistant Cordura fabric, and 90% 800 fill down / 10% feathers (vs CG's 80% max).

The style is unfussy, and the silver fox fur hood rim is detachable. Reflective strips are a matter of taste, but I am happy to have them when dog walking in the dark. Alpinetrek's 20% end of season discount was a clincher, when this coat (and the equivalent from CG) are almost never discounted.

I have used it in conditions that haven't tested it to the max (end of winter snow in southern England), but it is all that I expected. It has kept me very warm and the hood provides excellent wind protection.

Additional good points not anticipated are a zipped pocket on the left forearm (good for keys and tickets), a phone pocket high up on the inside right, and zipped inside breast and lower pockets. Features I'm less keen on are the rather difficult to access outer side pockets - velcro and zip, plus a long flap, and the upper side pockets (for handwarming?) that have to be accessed from further back than expected. The drawcord at the waist cuts into the inside breast pockets, making them difficult to use.

I found the fit to be spot on: the manufacturer's website says the product runs large - this was not my experience in XL, which fits snugly without thick layers. If you are somewhere seriously cold you might need to have layers underneath and I would recommend buying a size larger than normal.

In summary - yes, it's an expensive heavy coat but it provides full protection from the elements while retaining a relatively slim outline. If you are in two minds about the Jokla or the Canada Goose equivalent I can definitely recommend this one.
